Rembrandt van Rijn, Abraham Francen, 1657

Original Etching. EDITION: State VII (of IX) impression. IMAGE SIZE: 8 1/4 in x 6 1/4 in (141.8 cm x 15.9 cm). SHEET SIZE: 8 1/2 in x 6 5/8 in (21.6 cm x 16.9 cm). FRAMED SIZE: 23 3/4 in x 21 3/4 in (60.3 cm x 55.2 cm). PRIX 18,000 US$

DISCUSSION: Created in c. 1657, this original etching is from the unsigned, undated edition classified by Nowell-Usticke as a State VII (of IX) impression with strong, parallel regular shading along bend to the left of the hat; regular horizontal shading across upper part of trees through window; slipt stroke on cheek still visible, hat faintly visible.

Also known as “The Apothecary”, our curious subject is hard at work, studying a sheet of parchment while a large text is open on the table before him. Small jars, figurines, and a skull litter his workspace, giving clues to his occupation. He is well-dressed for a 17th century Dutchman, with elaborately designed clothing and with a large traveler’s hat on the bench beside him. In the background is a testament to Rembrandt’s impressive skill with the burin as a highly detailed, small-scale altarpiece is open and on display; this almost serves as another vignette within this already detailed composition.

ABOUT THE FRAMING: Conservation framed with archival materials to ensure lasting quality, this work is float-mounted in an Italian-style gold moulding. The intricately sculpted detail with swirled accents and carved rivets complements the etched quality of this work. Completed with white, linen-wrapped mats featuring a gold-plated name plate with a matching gold inner fillet, this work is set behind an archival Plexiglas® cover.
