A pair of wood figures. Yuan/Ming Dynasty

untitled1

A pair of wood figures. Yuan/Ming Dynasty

Each one modelled as a standing Luohan, standing on a lotus base and wearing loose-fitting garments, with both hands held together in prayer. Some traces of pigment still visible. Both about 35cm (14in) high. (2). Estimate: £5,000 - 8,000

Footnote: This genre of sculpture appears to have been popular during both the Yuan and Ming eras. For an unglazed pottery example, see No. 147 in The Avery Brundage Collection Catalogue. Compare also a standing wood figure of a Luohan, given to the Song Dynasty, in Christie's New York (lot93/20-3-2001).
