A Ming celadon oviform jar (Guan), 15th century

untitled1

A Ming celadon oviform jar (Guan), 15th century

The body decorated with floral designs and scrolling foliage; the unglazed base burnt orange, and with cracks as a result of firing. 20cm (8in) high. Estimate: £3,000 - 5,000

Footnote: For another example from this genre, see page 372 of 'Chinese Ceramics in the Topkapi Saray Museum/Yuan and Ming Dynasty Celadon wares' by Regina Krahl and John Ayers'. The authors assign this to the 15th Century, also drawing our attention to a further jar of this type in the Ardebil Shrine. See also Sotheby's 14.11.2001/lot 93 for a Longquan example, attributed to the late 14th/early 15th Century.
