A yellow-ground famille rose 'medallion' bowl. Daoguang underglaze-blue six-character sealmark and of the period (1821-50)

Brightly enamelled around the exterior with three medallions enclosing rams resting and cavorting in a garden setting, each medallion interspersed by a vase with flowers surrounded by auspicious objects, all reserved on a bright yellow sgraffiato ground, the interior finely painted in shades of cobalt blue with a central medallion enclosing further rams and surrounded by flowering stems. 5¾ in. (15 cm.) diam. Est. £8,000 - £12,000 - Price realised £23,125

Notes: The subject of the three rams in a field or garden setting was a popular theme referring to the yang principle in yinyang cosmology. The Chinese word for sun is taiyang, and that for ram is yang, a pun on the yang of yinyang. As such, the three rams, sanyang, made an allusion to the auspicious phrase sanyang kaitai, 'the beginnings of good fortune', which refers to the rebirth of nature in spring and the coming of renewed prosperity, as well as to the three Daoist gods known as the Sanyangsheng.
