A Ginori Doccia vase and a cover on a Florentine giltwood base. circa 1790

the baluster body finely painted with a continuous scene of peasants watering cattle in a stream, within blue enamel borders, the domed matched cover with a continuous ruin landscape in sepia monochrome, (restored rim chips). vase 39cm. high, 15¼in., stand: 12.5cm high, 5in. Est. 10,000—15,000 GBP

PROVENANCE: Sotheby's Milan, 15th June 2004, lot 47

NOTE: Once attributed to Cozzi, this class can be safely attributed to Doccia by the use of the whitened tin glaze to cover the typically grey glaze. The archives of the Doccia factory, only comparatively recently researched and published, show many entries for such vases, though actual examples are now rarely found. The painting of these pieces is of very high ambition and quality, and it is remarkable that a hand has yet to be identified. One candidate might be the painter of a covered bowl in the V & A collection, with scenes from Ovid's Metamorphoses, which is signed `F.1782' and `G.B.F. 1783', and attributed to Giovanni Battista Fanciullaci who was employed by the factory as a `miniaturist'.
