A large Gandharan stucco head of Buddha. 4th/5th Century

Elegantly modeled with a small urna between wide arching brows over heavy lidded downcast eyes, an aristocratic aquiline nose above a well-defined full mouth with a slight archaic smile, the hair composed of layered rows of tight spiral curls extending up over the prominent ushinisha, now mounted on a dark metal stand. . 14in (35.5cm) high. Estimate: $7,000 - 9,000

Portraying King Atlas with a furrowed brow framing large eyes, Roman nose and thick lips set off by a full beard of tight curls, his coiffure composed of further curls in a wave-like pattern, the bust loosely based on a Hellenistic prototype; now mounted on a dark wood base. . 7 1/4in (18.4cm) high excluding stand. The serene visage with an urna in relief on the forehead between arched eyebrows above heavy lidded eyes and full bow-shape lips accentuated by a prominent mustache, one of the elongated earlobes with a large earring, further jewelry on the tall moon-shaped diadem centering the coiffure of twisted plaits, now supported on a black stone base. 8in (20.4cm) high excluding base. Estimate: $2,000 - 3,000
