COMMENTAIRE: Jacob Bogdani is best known as the foremost painter of exotic animal and bird compositions of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. He was born in Eperjes, Saros, in Hungary in 1658. He worked in Amsterdam from 1684 and in 1686 shared a residence there with Ernst Stuven, the well-known still life painter. Bogdani arrived in London in 1688 and became known as 'The Hungarian'. Here he soon acquired a considerable reputation as a specialist still life and bird painter at the court of Queen Anne and several of his paintings are in the Royal Collection.
One of his early commissions was a set of flowerpieces for Queen Mary's 'Looking glasse closett in the Thames gallery' at Hampton Court Palace. Bogdani also supplied paintings for King William's palace at Dieren, Holland. One of his most important patrons was Admiral George Churchill, the Duke of Marlborough's brother, whose famous Windsor aviary might have provided subjects for some of his works. Several of George Churchill's pictures are now in the Royal collection, having been acquired by Queen Anne after his death in 1710.
His canvases are usually crowded with groups of exotic wild fowl displaying all their colourful finery to their best.

Note: The present painting shows the particular influence of the seminal Umbrian artist, Pietro Perugino (1450-1523). The interest in architectural space and decorative detail which it displays are consonant with early works attributed to Perugino. It thus incorporates the Florentine figural style (which Perugino himself drew especially from the elegant poses of his teacher, Verrocchio) within a spatial setting that was typical of Umbrian painters at the end of the fifteenth century.
Perugino was described in 1500 by Agostino Chigi as the first master in Italy and it was at that point that he was at the height of his artistic powers. Both his technique and inventiveness were then to prove vital models for the young Raphael. From the 1490s Perugino ran at least two studios simultaneously, one in Florence and the other in Perugia, both with a considerable number of assistants who helped him to respond to the large number of commissions he received. Besides Raphael himself, Perugino's Umbrian pupils included Pinturicchio, Giovanni Spagna, Andrea d'Assisi ('l'Ingegno'), Eusebio San Giorgio, Giovan Battista Caporali and Sinibaldo Ibi.

Youssef Nabil est né en 1972 au Caire. Il vit et travaille à Paris et New York.
"Portraits, vêtements, objets et surtout autoportraits sont ce qui compose, telles les tesselles d'une mosaïque, une sorte de journal intime de ce jeune artiste. Youssef Nabil semble absorbé dans une tentative d'appropriation de la vie et de son ‘lapsus', la mort, au travers de la photographie, coloriant ensuite à la main ses images noir et blanc. Son inspiration est issue des photographies de scène des flims égyptien de son enfance".

La galerie Magda Danysz continue d’affirmer son soutien de longue date au street art et accueille entre ses murs l’incroyable graffeur JonOne, précurseur du graffiti en France dès les années 80. A cette occasion, JonOne s’installe pour sa plus grande exposition personnelle à ce jour.
Graffeur, peintre abstrait, JonOne est incontestablement un artiste reconnu pour ses toiles et son travail à travers le monde. Ses couleurs, débordantes d’une énergie communicative, confèrent à ses toiles un aspect de vitraux contemporains.
C’est au coeur des quartiers pauvres de Harlem que JonOne commence à bomber les trains et les murs. « Le métro, c'est un musée qui traverse la ville ».
Il est l’un des premiers graffeurs New-Yorkais à Paris, l’influence de l’Amérique et de l’Europe dans son travail peut être ressentie mais il arrive pourtant à trouver son propre style, « chacune de mes toiles est une improvisation abstraite », dit-il de son travail.
C’est un artiste qui n’arrête jamais, comme il aime à le dire, il a besoin de cette création artistique pour s’épanouir.
Cette nouvelle exposition attire tant par la grandeur des toiles que par les couleurs utilisées qui séduisent l’oeil du visiteur. « Aujourd’hui, je sais d’avance quelles couleurs je vais utiliser.
J’essaie de mettre des formes plus poétiques, alors qu’avant je faisais des couleurs un peu violentes. »
JonOne amène ainsi l’art de la rue dans une galerie : « Je voudrais que le monde de l’art considère mon travail, certes, comme le travail émanant d’un esprit de rue, mais aussi comme le travail de JonOne ». Bien qu’elle puisse paraître antithétique au street art, la volonté de s’exprimer sur une toile, interroge et plaît aujourd’hui à tous.

Red Chinese glass collection at Bristol's City Museum & Art Gallery

The Chinese glass collection at Bristol's City Museum & Art Gallery is one of the finest outside Asia. There are over 300 pieces.
Most of the Chinese glass was acquired in 1950 from Mr H.R. Burrows Abbey through the National Art Collections Fund. It was given to Bristol partly because of the city's history of glass-making. Mr Abbey, who was born in Brighton in 1872, began collecting Chinese glass in about 1916. He continued collecting until his death in 1949. Some of the objects he purchased had been in other private collections, for example those belonging to Mr Ellice-Clark, Captain Warre and Mr A.W. Bahr. Some pieces in his collection were shown in the International Exhibition of Chinese Art at the Royal Academy, London, in 1935-36.
European glass-makers in the imperial workshops introduced the technique for making ruby red glass by adding gold. These red cups show the high degree of skill in glass-making achieved by imperial workshops by the Qianlong period (1736-1795).

A Ming lacquer table @ Victoria & Albert Museum

It is covered overall in red lacquer which is then decorated in the 'qiang jin' incised gold technique, whereby the pattern is incised with a sharp point and subsequently filled in with gold leaf. It was acquired in 1993 for £42,000 with £10,500 from The Art Fund from Nicholas Grindley. (www.artfund.org)

Dans leurs oeuvres, tous expriment une intelligence avec la terre et ses ressources, le temps, l’espace, et affirment une aptitude à traduire un certain bonheur d’exister.
Cet été à Melle, c'est au coeur du territoire rural et forestier du Poitou-Charentes, dans la ville de l’arbre (Prix national de l’arbre 2006) où cohabitent 4 000 Mellois et 1 600 essences de feuillus des cinq continents, que se tiendra la biennale.
Dans le patrimoine végétal et architectural de la ville, des oeuvres monumentales de Tadashi Kawamata, Gilles Clément, Rainer Gross, Jean-Paul Ganem, Paul Panhuysen, Jean-Luc Bichaud sont créées spécifiquement.
Elles appellent les promeneurs et visiteurs à une observation de la nature, à des explorations entre ciel et terre.
A travers l’excellence et la singularité de leurs démarches artistiques, Giuseppe Penone, Alexandre Hollan, Richard Long, Andy Goldsworthy, Christina Kubisch, Marc Deneyer, Philippe Jaquin-Ravaud, Samuel Rousseau, Monique Tello, Thierry Fontaine et tous les artistes présents donnent à voir et à appréhender l’arbre, poumon vert de la terre, si centralement et essentiellement présent dans tous les domaines de notre vie.
