Sotheby’s autumn sale of Important Jewels will take place on Monday 19 October, 2009. The auction is estimated in excess of $9 million and features an array of jewels from private American collections, as well as a selection of highquality white diamonds and signed and period pieces. The sale will be on exhibition at Sotheby’s New York galleries beginning 14 October alongside highlights from the Geneva sale of Magnificent Jewels to be held in November.

A spectacular pear-shaped diamond ring is the centerpiece of the sale. Weighing 29.53 carats, the D color, internally flawless stone has been recently determined to be both potentially flawless and type IIa by the Gemological Institute of America. With an estimate of $1,800,000/2,200,000, or $61,000 per carat, this ring is the star lot on offer from Property of a New York Estate, a collection that also includes jewels by Van Cleef & Arpels, Tiffany & Co., David Webb and Bulgari.

Unique jewels abound in the private collections offered this October. Also featured in the New York Estate is a Diamond Butterfly Brooch, Bulgari, set with over 24 carats of diamonds (est. $50/70,000). An elegant Platinum and Diamond Barrette (est. $20/30,000) and an abstract star-shaped Abalone Pearl, Cultured Pearl, Diamond and Emerald Brooch (est. $20/30,000), both the Property of a Lady, are two distinctive jewels made by David Webb, a firm widely known for bold geometric design and animal motif jewels. More representative of Webb’s style, but a rarely seen design, is the charming David Webb Pink Enamel, Colored Stone and Diamond Elephant Brooch (est. $15/20,000), sure to be one of the most appealing lots from a New York Estate. A private collection of period and turn-of-the-century jewels features an exquisite Diamond Bow Brooch, circa 1900 set with almost 14 carats of white and fancy color diamonds (est. $20/30,000).

The sale also includes a nice selection of high quality white diamonds under 10 carats, a segment of the market enjoying significant demand in the current economy. A Diamond Ring, J.E. Caldwell, from a Philadelphia Private Collection, is set with a marquise-shaped diamond weighing 8.01 carats, F color, VVS1 clarity (est. $225/275,000). Collectors looking for classic round diamond earstuds will find a pair of 4 carat stones, both D color and potentially flawless, offered by a Pennsylvania Private Collector (est. $350/400,000).

An 18 Karat Gold, Diamond and Amethyst “Botticelli” Necklace, Van Cleef & Arpels, from the New York Estate, is designed with a foliate motif and is a fitting cover lot for the October auction (est. $50/70,000).
