Hauteur: 7,7 cm. (3 in.), Longueur: 13,4 cm. (5¼ in.) Price Realized €97,000

Notes: Compare the current example with an 18th century rhinoceros horn cup also carved with a praying mantis and illustrated in J. Chapman, The Art of Rhinoceros Horn Carving in China, Christie's Books Ltd., London 1999, p.240, pl.347. The author also illustrates p.166, pl.207 another cup which has a similarly carved lotus flower base.

Hauteur: 8,5 cm. (3 3/8 in.), Longueur: 13 cm. (5 1/8 in.) Price Realized  €97,000

Provenance: From a French private collection

Notes: Ancient bronzes were one of the first things to be collected by the Chinese rulers, and have proved the most enduring items to influence other media in later periods. The Qing dynasty emperors showed an equal passion for ancient bronzes and for ordering contemporary vessels made in ancient style, fanggu (copying the ancient).
The current rhinoceros horn example is directly inspired by these earlier bronze prototypes although it shows the exquisite refinement of the 17th/18th century.
Compare with a polylobed rhinoceros horn gobelet illustrated in J. Chapman, The Art of Rhinoceros Horn Carving in China, Christie's Book Ltd., 1999, p.93, pl.76.
See also a very similar cup although decorated with a band of lotus scrolls, illustrated in T. Fok, Op. Cit., p.82, pl.35.
Two other libation cups from the Songzhutang collection, showing the same archaistic patterns and chilong handle, were sold in our Hong Kong Rooms, lots 1721 and 1723.

Hauteur: 7,5 cm. (3 in.), Longueur: 12 cm. (4¾ in.) Price Realized €73,000

Provenance: From a Swiss private collection

Notes: The poem inscribed can be translated as follow:

'The Immortal enjoys so much his journey with the beauty,
Wondering who would accompany the beauty in future?'

Compare the actual cup with another very refine example, although not inscribed, illustrated in J. Chapman, The Art of Rhinoceros Horn Carving in China, Christie's Book Ltd., 1999, p.93, pl.76.

Coupe libatoire en corne de rhinocéros sculptée. Chine, XVIIème siècle. Photo: Christie's Images Ltd., 2009

Hauteur: 8 cm. (3 1/8 in.) Price Realized €51,400

Provenance: From a French private collection

Notes: Such horns are very simple and in the same time very refined. Fashioned as a segment of a thick tree trunk, it is enhanced by the exquisite prunus branch. Comparable examples are illustrated in T. Fok, Connoisseurship of Rhinoceros Horn Carving in China, p.163, pl.112 ; and in J. Chapman, The Art of Rhinoceros Horn Carving in China, Christie's Books Ltd., London 1999, p.169, pls.214 and 215.

Coupe libatoire en corne de rhinocéros sculptée. Chine, XVIIème-XVIIIème siècle. Photo: Christie's Images Ltd., 2009

Hauteur: 9 cm. (3½ in.), Longueur: 11 cm. (4 3/8 in.) Price Realized €46,600

Notes: As an important symbol of Longevity, the pine tree was depicted on rhinoceros horn cups even more often that the lotus. The current example shows the achieved technique of the carvers in showing the texture of the tree with its tortuous and scaly surface as well as the refinement of the needles. See a comparable example illustrated in J. Chapman, The Art of Rhinoceros Horn Carving in China, Christie's Books Ltd., London 1999, p.175, pl.229.
