Blue & White Kinrande Style Shallow Bowl, 明代 Ming Dynasty, 嘉慶 Jiajing Period (1522-1566)

A blue and white shallow bowl with a wide everted rim raised on a tall ring foot painted in Kinrande style, the Japanese term meaning gold brocade style, popular during the reign of the Jiajing emperor, Houcong. The cavetto painted in iron red with traces of a gilt floral motif in evidence and beneath the rim a single underglaze blue line border under the iron red pigment. In the well of the bowl a haloed deity holding a sword, likely 呂洞賓 Lu Dongbin one of the eight immortals, is illustrated astride a crane flying amongst clouds above water within double line borders. The exterior decorated between line borders with wisps of lingzhi-formed clouds. On the white glazed base in underglaze blue are four kaishu characters reading Fu shou kang ning, translated as "Happiness, longevity and good health".
Diameter:  5 5/8 " (14.2 cm). Condition:  Excellent, several frits on the rim and small chip on the foot edge, gilt worn on the cavetto. Price on application
