Axel Vervoordt @ BRAFA Bruxelles 2010

Head of a royal official. Black granodiorite. Egypt, New Kingdom, XVIII Dynasty, reign of Amenhotep III, ca. 1388-1351 before J.C. H. 14 x W. 18 x L. 12,5 cm Provenance: M. Maspero, descendant of Gaston Maspero (1846-1916), French Egyptologist and former Director-General of Excavations and Antiquities of Egypt, Paris, 1980s; European private collection, acquired in 1989 Günther Uecker (Wendorf, 1930), Schlachtfeld (battlefield), 1966 Kaolin and nails on canvas laid down on board. Signed, titled and dated 'Uecker 66 Schlachtfeld' on the reverse. 70 x 70 cm As a key player in the Dusseldorf-based Zero movement with Otto Pienne and Heinz Mack, he embodies ideas of a new beginning from point zero, distancing themselves from the wartime atrocities perpetuated by their country. This canvas is an example of his unique oeuvre, where the angular positioning of the nails diagonally through the composition creates a relationship between light and shadow and brings a sense of energy and motion to the surface. Aphrodite Anadyomene. White marble with dark patina. Greek, Hellenistic period, 3rd-1st century before J.C. H. 102 x W. 37 x L. 38 cm. Provenance: The Grand Rapids Art Museum, Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA
