NOTE: (...)

A pale green glazed tripod incense burner. Late 14th / Early 15th Century. photo Bonhams

The straight sides rising from three cabriole feet and moulded around the exterior with the eight trigrams, bagua, amidst foliate scrolls, enclosed by two raised bands, with cloud scrolls below the flattened rim, covered all over with a 'kinuta' glaze, stopping short of the circular aperture at the base to reveal the porcelain body burnt orange during firing, zitan stand. 24.2cm diam.(9.5in) wide. Estimate: HK$150,000 - 250,000, USD 19,000 - 32,000 Unsold

Provenance: S. Marchant and Son, London.

S. Marchant and Son

It is extremely rare to find a Longquan pale green celadon incense burner of such exquisite colour. Deriving its form from an archaic Han lian container, it is an excellent example of a high quality early Ming dynasty commission. Certainly, the presence of the very fine quality carved zitan stand demonstrates that it was considered a prized object during the Qing dynasty.

An extremely rare sacrificial-red glazed bowl. Xuande incised six-character mark and of the period

untitled7

An extremely rare sacrificial-red glazed bowl. Xuande incised six-character mark and of the period. photo Bonhams

Of inverted bell-shape, the deep flared bowl supported on a straight foot, the rounded sides rising steeply to a flared rim, covered all over in a rich and lustrous mottled red glaze, skilfully brushed with white glaze at the rim, foot and base creating a distinct contrast. 15.2cm (6in) diam. Estimate: HK$500,000 - 700,000, USD 64,000 - 90,000 Unsold.

Illustrated: Kaikodo Journal, New York, Spring 2001, no.84

No intact sacrificial-red glazed bowl of this rare Islamic-derived form with a Xuande reign mark appears to be recorded in any public or private collection. However, an excavated example, identical in form, was exhibited by the Urban Council, Hong Kong and the Jingdezhen Museum of Ceramic History, Imperial Porcelain of the Yongle and Xuande Periods Excavated from the Site of the Ming Imperial Factory at Jingdezhen, Catalogue, 1989, no. 73.

For two other monochrome examples in white and blue preserved in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, differing from the current example in that the kaishu reign marks are not incised, but inscribed in underglaze-blue, see Catalogue of the Special Exhibition of Selected Hsuan-te Imperial Porcelains of the Ming Dynasty, Taipei, 1998, pl. 57 and pl. 58.

The only Xuande reign-marked bowl of this form that appears to have been offered at auction is a yellow-glazed bowl, with similar incised mark as on the current example, sold Christie's Hong Kong, 25 October 1993, lot 732, and illustrated in Christie's 20 Years in Hong Kong, 2006, pg.105. It is now in the Meiyintang Collection, and is illustrated by Regina Krahl, Chinese Ceramics from the Meiyintang Collection, Volume Four, London, 2010, pl.1665.

A magnificent pair of famille rose 'peony' bowls. Yongzheng six-character marks within double-circles and of the period

d5321117l

A magnificent pair of famille rose 'peony' bowls. Yongzheng six-character marks within double-circles and of the period (1723-1735). Photo: Christie's Images Ltd., 2010

The exterior of each bowl is intricately detailed in shades of pink, iron-red, yellow, pale green and turquoise-green enamels to depict two bees in flight above leafy branches bearing peony and magnolia blossoms at varying stages of maturity, entwined with a cluster of smaller daisy flowers - 4 in. (10.1 cm.) diam. (2) Est. HK$7,000,000 - HK$10,000,000 ($905,963 - $1,294,233)

Provenance: The Doris Duke Collection, by repute
Chait Galleries, New York, acquired by the present owner in 1970

Notes: Compare a bowl of slightly larger proportions decorated with five peony blossoms from the collection of K. L. Essayan sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 29 April 2002, lot 567 and again 28 November 2005, lot 1349; and its pair from the same collection sold at Sotheby's London, 2 March 1971, lot 195, and again, at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 29 November 1976, lot 626, and illustrated by Daisy Lion-Goldschmidt and Jean-Claude Moreau-Gobard, Chinese Art, pl. 163. Another pair of larger but very similarly decorated Yongzheng bowls were sold at Parke-Bernet Galleries, Liquidation of the Entire Stock of the New York store of Yamanaka & Co. Inc., 24-27 May 1944, lot 288. Other related bowls include a pair of the same size but with straight sides, sold at Christie's New York, 3 June 1993, lot 294; and another painted with yellow and white peonies in the Baur collection, illustrated by J. Ayers, The Baur Collection, Vol. 2, Geneva, 1999, p. 115, pl. A599. A pair of closely related bowls to those in the Baur collection was sold at Christie's New York, 3 June 1993, lot 294. A larger Yongzheng-marked bowl attributed to the Palace Workshops in Beijing with very similar elements but slight differences in the composition is illustrated by H. Moss, By Imperial Command, Hong Kong, 1976, pl. 63. Compare also a related bowl of identical size to the present example decorated with chrysanthemum rather than peony, sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 7 May 2002, lot 535. For a Qianlong-marked bowl of the same pattern but without the magnolia, compare a bowl sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 31 October 2000, lot 909.

During the Yongzheng period, enamellers at the palace workshops concentrated on improving their techniques and skills in painting enamels on porcelain, and in only a short period of time, they were able to achieve high artistic standards which have never been surpassed. Formal bands of floral decoration gave way to more naturalistic compositions on white ground, giving emphasis to the pureness of the porcelain and the painterly manner in which the motifs have been rendered. This is the case on the present bowl with the design of peonies in full bloom with yellow enamel stippled centers resembling pollen to attract the two bees hovering above.

oil on canvas; 61.5 by 50.4 cm. Est. 30,000—40,000 EUR. Lot Sold  90,750 EUR

EXHIBITED: IJsselstein, Stadsmuseum IJsselstein, Zomerse Stillevens & Tuinen. Hollandse meesters Barok en Modern, 25 April - 30 September 2009.

NOTE: Although it remains unclear where exactly Luyckx was active during his career, it is known that he stayed in his native town of Antwerp until at least the 1650s, and possibly even later. French inscriptions on his later paintings allow us to believe he moved to southern regions, but no documents confirm this.
His preferred subjects consist of vanitas paintings, game pieces and flower still lifes, mostly containing garlands, see for example the one sold, New York, Sotheby's, 26 January 2006, lot 11, or festoons, and like this painting, a swag of flowers. They have been recorded in private Antwerp collections as early as 1652.1
