The work of Binh Danh in Memory to Memory creates moments of awareness and memory between the subject and the viewer. In his serene and radiant photo portraits, the faces of executed Vietnamese and Cambodian victims of war or images of the Buddha, are printed on living tree leaves and grasses using a botanical process of the artist’s own invention, called chlorophyll printing.

Through his portraits on leaves, Danh hopes to quietly bring into focus the humanity of lives lost. Danh says, “I believe we are reincarnated, not from soul to soul, but from memory to memory. I only hope that as viewers look at my work, the portraits of the victims are reincarnated or resurrected, in the present moment. The dead are able to live for a time in our minds and be a part of the material world. And maybe somewhere in the far distance of our universe the atoms that once belonged to those people glow a little.”
