NOTE: This painting depicts a view of the Chiesa della Salute from il Canale della Guidecca.
According to the family of the artist, who have a copy of his birth certificate, Edward A. Goodall was christened Edward Angelo. However at some point, an art encyclopedia misnamed him as Edward Alfred, leading to some confusion in subsequent dictionaries. The family also have the certificate of his acceptance into the RWS, which was duly signed by him and by Her Majesty the Queen Victoria, which further confirms the middle initial.
