Note: The shape of this teapot closely follows a Meissen prototype. The decoration is very similar to that on a jug and basin illustrated by Tamara Préaud, La Porcelaine de Vincennes, 1991, p. 140, no. 83. Note: Rosalind Savill has made a special study of the Vincennes/Sèvres factory and the Turkish market. In a lecture during the French Porcelain Society Seminar 9th October 2009 she gave a survey of possible shapes and decoration. In the 1753 stocklist of the Vincennes factory, twenty-three models were recorded 'pour le turc' and in 1754, eighteen more were added. They consisted of useful wares, toilet wares and vases. Ten different versions of bardaque or large cup shape are listed, and this item is thought to correspond to one of these. The decoration of turquoise ground and flowers is also found on the large coffer plaques of 1754-5 thought to have been made for a Turkish client in the Wallace Collection. By 1756 Vincennes had stopped making special pieces for the Turkish market as this date marked the beginning of a period of isolation from Europe for the Ottoman empire following the Treaty of Versailles in May of that year.
