Harry Winston (1896 - 1978), The King of Diamonds Luxe, glamour et élégance... Voici ce qu'inspire chacune des créations d'un des plus grands joailliers du XXe siècle,

Harry Winston. Né en Ukraine en 1896, il apprend le métier de bijoutier auprès de son père qui vient d'ouvrir une boutique à New York. Cette nouvelle terre d'accueil et l'énergie inépuisable qui se dégage de cette ville deviendront pour Harry Winston une de ses principales sources d'inspiration et le moteur de ses plus grands chefs-d'oeuvre.

En 1932, il crée la société Harry Winston Inc et achète la collection de bijoux d'Arabella Huntington décédée en 1929, richissime héritière du magnat des chemins de fer Henry Huntington. Cet achat sera décisif dans la carrière de ce joailler qui fait le choix de mettre au goût des new-yorkais ces bijoux démodés créés par la Maison Cartier notamment mais avec une qualité des pierres remarquables.

A cet instant, Winston va réaliser des bijoux révolutionnaires dans leur conception comme par exemple des colliers souples sur mailles de platine qui ondulent avec les mouvements de la personne qui les portent. Il va alors s'entourer de collaborateurs qui vont développer son style inégalable et fournir les personnalités de la haute société de renommée internationale.

Parmi ses clients, on retrouve la Duchesse de Windsor, la Maharanée de Jaipur mais également la famille Rockefeller.

Son surnom de «The King of Diamonds» tient au fait qu'il eut entre les mains des pierres prestigieuses et légendaires comme le Hope et l'Oppenheimer. Il fit du diamant un art à part entière en s'entourant de gemmologues, de designers et d'artisans qui surent, sous ses recommandations, faire de cette pierre, une véritable sculpture.

Chaque oeuvre de joaillerie signée Harry Winston fait l'objet d'une étude méticuleuse des pierres précieuses afin de conférer à tous les bijoux son aspect unique et extraordinaire.

Objets de tous les fantasmes, les chefs-d'oeuvre d'Harry Winston sont devenus de véritables symboles incarnés au cinéma dans le film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes où Marylin Monroe inclut dans sa chanson Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend ces paroles: «Talk to me, Harry Winston, tell me all about it».

painted in the centre with two iron-red carp, one leaping from the water and the other swimming beneath, all amongst lotus leaves, flowers, arrowhead, grasses and aquatic plants, encircled by an underglaze-blue double ring, the cavetto with four further carp and a mandarin fish amongst dense aquatic plants, flowerheads and grasses, beneath an underglaze-blue double line at the rim, the underside similarly painted. 8 ¼ inches, 20.9 cm diameter. decorated with tapering panels each with a different bird, including a bird of paradise, all perched amongst flowering branches of magnolia, peony, camellia, winter prunus, tree peony and prunus within a black enamel frame with chamfered corners, beneath faceted panels with stylized pink flowerheads on a yellow ground reserved on a pink flowerhead diaper ground and beneath grisaille landscape panels on the gently flaring neck, the galleried rim with a green-ground keyfret band. Ormolu stand. 23 ¾ inches, 60.2 cm high. Price on request

Formerly in a private French collection, purchased from the heirs of a career soldier who brought it back from China at the end of the 19th Century.

of club form slightly tapering towards the foot, painted on each facet with a mountainous river landscape with houses, viewing pavilions, pine, wuti and incised celadon rockwork, two panels with fishermen, one beneath the moon, each panel within underglaze blue double lines, the flat shoulder with four sprays of prunus, lotus, bamboo and daisy with tall branches of bamboo, repeated on the cylindrical flaring tall neck. 21 1/8th inches, 53.7 cm high. The unglazed base with recessed glazed centre, bearing a six-character mark of Kangxi in underglaze blue and of the period, 1662-1722. - Price on request

No other vase of this type appears to be recorded.

A similar blue and white vase, painted with a night visit to the Red Cliff and inscribed with part of the poem, together with a similar Kangxi mark and identical sprays of bamboo on the neck, is illustrated by Wang Qingzheng in Kangxi Porcelain Wares from the Shanghai Museum Collection, no. 31, pp. 42-43, another from the Wang Xin Lou collection is illustrated by Julian Thompson and Dr. Robert D. each painted on the lower section with archaic bronze style taotieh masks between stylized animal heads, the centre bulb with three further taotieh masks and the top bulb with three archaic style characters in white on blue-ground roundels beneath lappets on the cylindrical tall neck, all between underglaze blue double lines. 9 7/8th inches, 25.1 cm high. Il en est des hommes comme de certains voyages, ils ne sont pas à la portée des âmes faibles. Eric Humbert s'est aventuré en Ethiopie où il a trouvé l'opale qu'il a souhaité faire découvrir. Plus tard, il s'est rendu à Bornéo à la découverte des îles de la Sonde, là où émerge un pic rocheux couvert de forêts, Komodo, la patrie des dragons. Comme de l'oeil sombre aux paillettes amusées du fauve repérant sa proie, de ce bijou émane toute la séduction du prédateur

Eric Humbert voulait emprunter une voie différente de celle de son père Claude, éminent Maître Joaillier. La vie en décida autrement. Eric Humbert apprit ainsi le métier auprès de son père, patiemment, minutieusement, les gestes sûrs, les techniques éprouvées, la précision du détail soigné, la justesse des proportions. Au cours de ses années d'apprentissage lui vint la passion de la joaillerie de création. Au décès de son père en 1996, Eric Humbert perpétua son art, enrichissant son héritage de l'écho des voyages au long cours qu'il ne cessera d'entreprendre. Ces destinations lointaines donnent des ailes à ses yeux migrateurs et renouvellent son imagination. Il en retient des images, des couleurs. Il en rapporte des perles de pluie, des pierres précieuses, diamants, rubis, émeraudes, tourmalines et opales mystérieuses.

Pendentif composé d'un grenat spessartite de 9,65 carats et de 105 diamants taille brillant pour un poids total de 2,30 carats. Monture en or de deux tons. Poids du pendentif: 14,5 grammes environ Poids du collier: 6,5 grammes environ

La création vient parfois de la pierre même que l'on veut mettre en valeur. C'était le cas de cette magnifique spessartite qui exigeait d'être au centre de toutes les attentions. Telle une planète entourée de ses étoiles, cette pierre ronde s'est entourée d'une centaine de diamants qui ondulent autour d'elle comme pour la sublimer.

Composé d'un péridot rectangle de 9,95 carats et de 55 brillants d'un poids total de 0,90 carat. Monture en or de deux tons. Poids brut: 13,9 grammes Estimation : 18 000 - 20 000 €

Le vertige de la Colombie et de sa source verte d'inspiration s'exprime dans ce bijou. Ce chat stylisé, imperceptible au premier regard, mais en même temps si présent quand on l'observe. Pensez-y, cette pupille verticale d'un vert envoûtant avec son émeraude, ces moustaches en dizaines de brillants, ces oreilles pointues qui semblent le porter.

Bague ornée de deux pavés de brillants et d'une ligne de rubis au centre. Vingt rubis d'un poids de 0,30 carat 76 brillants d'un poids de 0,98 carat Poids brut: 5 grammes environ. Estimation : 7 000 - 8 000 €

C'est au Pérou qu'est née l'inspiration de cette bague aux couleurs chatoyantes. Inspiré des chapeaux colorés des péruviens, cette bague mobile incarne l'originalité et la beauté rencontrée par Eric Humbert lors de son voyage sur l'extraordinaire Machu Picchu.
