This collection formed the crowning gift to his generous endowment of a college for women (now known as Royal Holloway, University of London), which he founded in 1879 and which was opened by Queen Victoria in 1886. David Roberts RA: "Lithographs of Egypt and the Holy Land" @ Mathaf Gallery, London

David Roberts, A Modern Mansion, Cairo, Roberts’ travels to the Middle East from 1838-1839 were described by his biographer James Ballantine as the “great central episode of his artistic life”. He returned from this trip laden with material which, over the course of the next decade, he made into a series of watercolours for lithographs executed by Louis Haghe and published between 1842-1849.
