3 Important Works from the Qianlong Emperor’s Reign
Alongside the new, graceful aesthetic developed over the course of the Qianlong Emperor’s long reign came a re-interpretation of traditional archaic Chinese design. At Freeman’s in Philadelphia, three fine vases from the Qianlong Emperor’s workshops will be offered for auction on March 19.

The pear-shaped body painted in Ming style with bamboo and banana palms in a terraced garden setting, above a lappet band at the foot and below a ruyi squared scroll and foliate borders at the neck and foliate sprays below the rim. The protruding top frame with beaded, rounded edges supported on corner posts of rounded square section framing the panel doors, opening to reveal the interior with three shelves, all above a plain apron and apron-head spandrels on the front and sides. 57 7/8 in.
