A very rare large late Ming blue and white reverse-decorated 'hundred cranes' jar. Wanli six-character mark and of the period (1573-1619). Photo Christies Ltd 2011 The large jar strongly potted and skilfully painted with vertical stripes around the lipped mouth, a classic scroll around the neck and the body of the vessel with cranes in flight amongst scrolling clouds reserved in white against a rich blue ground, the mark within a double ring countersunk into the centre of the unglazed base; 15 3/8 in. Wanli six-character mark and of the period. photo Bonhams Of broad rounded form, the steep sides rising from a straight foot and flaring out at the rim, the interior painted in rich tones of underglaze-blue with a circular medallion enclosing a pair of five-clawed dragons writhing in pursuit of a flaming pearl, the cavetto with four stylised lotus flowers, the exterior painted with four baskets of fruit and flowers interspersed with butterflies, below a narrow band of auspicious motifs... A small blue and white baluster jar. Wanli six-character mark and of the period © 2002-2010 Bonhams 1793 Ltd Boldly painted around the sides with a wide meandering lotus scroll, with one of the Eight Precious Treasures, Babao, including a flaming pearl, ruyi, coral and coin, above each lotus flower, with a diaper cell pattern at the shoulder and a trellis scroll above the foot. 12.9cm (5in) high - Sold for £18,000 Bonhams. A wucai sweetmeat box, Wanli six-character mark and of the period Comprising six mallow-shaped compartments painted around the rim with a narrow blue band, the exterior walls decorated with five cartouches enclosing pairs of birds perched on flowering branches or in flight, all reserved on an iron-red and green enamelled floral honeycomb ground. 18.5cm (7¼in) diam.
