Follower of Sebastiano del Piombo (c. 1485, Venice – June 21, 1547, Rome), Ecce Homo
oil on panel. 54.5 by 40 cm. Est. 10,000—15,000 USD - Lot Sold 8,750 USD
NOTE: The present Ecce Homo appears to be a copy (with small differences) on panel after a lost composition by Sebastiano del Piombo, known to scholars through a faithful recording in the Palazzo Pitti, Florence. Michael Hirst, in his monograph on Sebastiano, connects the lost original to a letter of June 8, 1530, from Vittorio Soranzo to Pietro Bembo, in which Soranzo describes that Sebastiano's first and successful experiment with a stone support was a painting of Christ done on marble.
